Natural relief for pain

The expression ‘a pain in the neck’ isn’t used for nothing – there are few things that are able to ruin your mood as quickly and effectively as pain, whether it’s in your neck, head, joints, or back. When we need relief for pain we tend to reach for the painkillers at the first opportunity, and those unfortunate enough to suffer from chronic pain must rely on medication. Though typically safe, even mild pain relievers can carry with them side-effects, whilst the stronger variety are often addictive. There are, however, natural alternatives to hundreds of conventional painkillers currently on the market. Of course, in many situations there is still no substitute for medication.

The dangers of painkillers

There are those of us who can take a painkiller and experience only the relief that it brings, but for others painkillers bring on side effects like drowsiness and nausea, which make it difficult to go about your everyday life as usual. Even more troubling, painkillers can be very addictive when taken over a long period of time. If you have  pain – particularly a headache – that just won’t go away, what you’re feeling might be a withdrawal symptom relating to the drug that you took to deal with the pain in the first place. It seems like a vicious circle, but you can break it with the use of natural medication that don’t have side-effects and are non-addictive.

Types of pain

Relief for pain from different sources should take different forms. One of the problems with conventional painkillers is that they provide the same short-term solution to a variety of different problems. Painkillers usually work by numbing the receptors in your brain that sense the pain you experience, so that wherever it’s coming from, it’s masked and you can get on with your day. Natural medication, on the other hand, is more specific – the medication will use specific natural products for specific types of pain and will provide a remedy for the cause of the pain – whatever that may be – rather than the result.

Some of the most commonly experienced types of pain are migraines, arthritic pain, and back pain. There are hundreds of medications used to treat hundreds of different types of arthritis, but a natural medication such as a product containing the Indian herb Boswellia might be the solution. Similarly, migraines are often treated with everything from over-the-counter painkillers to more specialised medication and anti-nausea pills, but the problem could be solved with something as simple as an increase in magnesium. You know what kind of pain you’re experiencing, so if it’s affecting you on a daily basis consider getting relief for pain by finding the right medication.

What’s the catch?

The main problem that most people have with using natural medication to relieve pain is that it tends not to work as quickly as conventional medicine. The difference is that many of the natural options available are long-term ones – they’ll provide you with relief for pain that lasts, stopping it from coming back rather than just causing it to go away. In the end, it’s all about what works for you. Just be sure to consult your doctor or a trained herbalist before trying home pain remedies.
