If you’ve ever tried a diet and found it just doesn’t work – you get tired of feeling hungry the whole time, or sick of eating tasteless foods – then you might want to learn the benefits of introducing healthy smoothies to your diet. Of course, the most obvious benefit of a smoothie diet is the great taste, allowing you to mix all manner of fresh fruits, like strawberry, mango, kiwi, grapefruit, bananas, you name it, and lose weight in the process. In addition to variety and taste, smoothies are also very healthy for your body, and even easy to make.

Easy, and tasty

The first point to make, is they’re tasty. Super tasty in fact! With nothing more than a blender and ingredients of your choice, you can tailor your smoothie to your precise tastes. Don’t like banana? Leave it out! Find oranges too sweet? Use a grapefruit instead! The combinations of flavours are literally limitless, so there’s no lack of variety.

The smoothie breakfast

The Weightloss diet recommends substituting a healthy smoothie for breakfast. This works well, they explain, as it is the time when the metabolism kickstarts for the day’s calorie burn. According to the site, ‘The trouble is, most people leave their breakfast meal filled with quick burning carbohydrates, which leads to snacking only a few hours later and a huge onslaught of unneeded calories. The diet breakfast smoothie is created from whole fruits and yoghurts and soy or whey proteins that help to start off the day with an increase in calorie burning power.’ With the right combination of ingredients in your breakfast smoothie, you won’t be getting hungry again just a few hours after eating!

Interesting ingredients

Beyond the usual fruits and vegetables, there are a number of interesting ingredients you can add to your smoothies to get additional nutritional benefits. Happyjuicer.com recommends:

  • Wheatgerm – this is high in fibre and a good source of vitamin E and Folic acid
  • Spirulina
  • Wheatgrass powder – a great source of chlorophyll
  • Tahini – A sesame seed paste
  • Royal Jelly – produced by bees and containing a wide variety of nutritional bounty

The key, as with any diet, is to not overdo it. Including smoothies in your diet will add variety to your meals, give you the opportunity to include supplements you might not otherwise, and with a little luck, assist you in losing weight. Unless under the guidance of a doctor or dietician, it is not advisable to substitute more than one meal for a smoothie per day, and always remember to supplement your smoothies with a balanced diet.
