Spinal care – prevention is better than cure

There are several warning signs that your spine may not be in tip-top shape. Stiffness throughout your spine, constant neck or back ache as well as headaches, not being able to turn your head comfortably, not being able to twist your hips easily, feeling a constant tension in your joints or muscles and having a continual need to crack your neck, back and various joints are just a few of the symptoms of a spine that is not in its best form.

Spinal care ‑ everyday movement

Prevention is always better than cure and if your back is still healthy, you won’t necessarily need to go to a medical practitioner. To avoid injuries, pay attention to how you move and do things. For example, don’t pick up anything that’s too heavy, rather ask somebody to help you. Also, avoid sitting for hours while doing an activity that can cause repetitive strain on the joints between your vertebrae. Too much computer work, for example, can lead to mechanical back strain.

Warm up properly for at least 15 minutes before you exert your back. By preparing your muscles with simple stretches before exercising or gardening, you can lesson your chances of over-straining your back. Avoid exercises that can exacerbate any back problems. A biokineticist can help you work out a tailor-made back care program.

Spinal care – diet and support

Diet can play a role in muscles stiffness. If you’re consuming too much alcohol, coffee, refined food and sugary food, you run the risk of having high acidity levels. Work towards eating more alkaline foods, especially if you’re living a stressful life. If your acidity levels are overboard, consider going on a strict alkaline diet. Without adequate supplies of calcium and magnesium, your body is made more vulnerable to mechanical strain.

Double check the mattress you’re sleeping on. A pocket-spring mattress with a sewn on ‘pillow top’ is recommended by some chiropractors. If your mattress is too soft, it won’t give your spine the support it needs. If your mattress is too hard, it won’t cushion your contours adequately. Good quality rest is imperative to your overall health, not only your musculo-skeletal system.
