In the UK almost one in every two families has a pet. Research by the Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association (PFMA) has found that 60 per cent of pet owners say their furry friends make them feel happier and more relaxed and 81 per cent of people agree that ‘Pets are the antidote to a bad mood’. Of the people surveyed, almost a third said their pets make them healthier. It turns out they were right. Here are five ways your pet can help your health.
Lower allergy risk
It may seem strange that pets, often responsible for allergies, can reduce them. But they do. A number of studies have found that children who grow up in a home with furry pets like cats and dogs are less at risk for asthma, eczema and allergies. They also have stronger immune systems.
Less stress
Mindlab International conducted a survey that found that 55 per cent of people were more relaxed after being in their pets’ company while 44 per cent were less worried about problems like finance and job security.
Cats lower blood pressure
Researchers who looked at almost 4,500 people found that those with cats were 40 per cent less at risk for having a fatal heart attack. The team thinks this is because having a cat reduces stress and anxiety, which means lower blood pressure.
Dogs lower cholesterol and blood pressure
A Bristol psychologist wrote in the British Journal of Health Psychology that dog owners have lower cholesterol and blood pressure. This is largely to do with regular walks but contact with a dog is also good psychologically. Besides lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, dog owners also have fewer serious medical problems.
Pets help with serious illness
Some doctors recommend ‘pet therapy’ for patients who need companionship. This is because they’ve found that having to care for a pet motivates people with serious illnesses to do their best to get better. Having an animal to care for and feed can make patients take better care of themselves and their health.
