It’s easy to go overboard with snacks, and most snacks are packed with calories you could do without. If you find yourself eating a whole bag of crisps instead of a handful or finishing a tub of ice-cream in one go, you could definitely do with some healthier alternatives. Read on for three snacks – sweet, savoury and very yummy – that are 100 calories or less a serving.
Kale crisps
Kale is one of the most nutritious foods around. It’s packed with antioxidants, full of fibre and contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Cut some kale into bite-sized pieces, lay it out on a baking tray, sprinkle with a little vegetable oil and bake gently for 15 minutes. Once the crisps are ready, sprinkle with a little salt. Half a bunch of kale’s worth of crisps is just 59 calories, so you can afford to go wild with them.
Honey and peanut butter balls
Honey and peanut butter balls are sweet and full of protein, iron and fibre. They’re only 100 calories a serving, too. Mix 1 cup of non-sweetened peanut butter with a cup of honey, 3 cups of oats and a cup of dried fruit together. Form the mixture into balls and roll them in granola or coconut.
Hummus with celery
Hummus is a good source of protein, healthy carbohydrates and good fats, while celery is incredibly low in calories. Blend together 2 cans of chickpeas, a quarter of a cup of tahini, some lemon juice, two cloves of garlic, half a teaspoon of cumin, a little olive oil and some salt to taste. Dip a cup of celery sticks cut into quarters (10 calories) or a cup of red pepper (also just 10 calories) into a serving of hummus (90 calories) next time you need a savoury snack.
