Judith Wills writes in her book that ‘not until you cleanse and lighten your body through diet can you feel truly energised.’ She suggests that a three day detox diet will not only give you a taste of natural food again, it will also reduce your cravings for salty and sweet food – and set the tone for a nutritional high energy diet from there. Expect to lose a little weight but to gain a whole lot of energy.
Day one
Start your day with a glass of water and be sure to drink plenty of water during the rest of the day. Prepare a drink of green tea and a fruit salad consisting of apple, melon and some banana for breakfast.
Have a large salad for lunch using the following ingredients: lettuce, cucumber, tomato, celery, watercress, fresh almonds, sunflower seeds and peppers. Your salad dressing should be made with olive oil and apple cider vinegar. Have some freshly juiced pineapple too.
Dinner consists of poached salmon with broccoli, green beans and brown rice. Blend some avocado with cucumber and garlic for a tangy sauce and prepare some camomile tea to sip before bed.
Day two
Have some water upon rising, followed by a breakfast of green tea and a bowl of fresh cherries with melon and sunflower seeds.
Have a lentil soup for lunch by cooking brown lentils with onions and carrots in a freshly made vegetable stock. Dress your soup with coriander and serve it with a rice cake. Have an apple and some water as well.
Dinner is made up of a dressing of olive oil and apple cider vinegar mixed with brown rice, chopped onion, tomato, basil and some pine nuts. Have a cup of cranberry juice and a banana for dessert.
Day three
Once again, have a glass of water when you wake up. Have a slice of rye bread for breakfast with a cup of green tea as well as an apple and a handful of fresh almonds.
Lunch is another green salad consisting of a generous portion of raw baby spinach, watercress, rocket, pepper and tofu. Dress your salad with olive oil and vinegar and serve it with a slice of dark rye bread and a glass of cranberry juice.
Dinner allows for another large salad made up of a handful of sliced new potatoes, tomatoes, onion, cucumber, mint, parsley and garlic. Dress your salad with olive oil, lemon juice and some sesame seeds. A slice of cantaloupe melon is a sweet end to your three day detox diet.
Herbs, massage and exercise
Wills says that it is possible to speed up your detox by taking herbal supplements like aloe vera and milk thistle. There are a number of teas you can sip on, too: dandelion, parsley, nettle, rosemary or thyme. Chop up the herbs and drink them as teas once or twice a day.
Lymphatic drainage massage and exercise can further help release toxins from the body.
