Can exercising make you fat?

Many of us take up some form of exercise for various reasons, whether to get healthier or to stay fit. The majority of us, however, start exercising because we want to shed a few pounds. We picture ourselves in that perfect bikini and push ourselves to the limit, but what if your exercise routine is not helping you lose weight? If you have been working out for a while, but cannot see any results, then you may be doing something wrong. Here are a few factors which may be limiting your weight loss.

Are you drinking enough water?

It is very important to hydrate yourself during exercise. Make sure that you drink a sufficient amount of water every day because if your body feels dehydrated, it will go into survival mode and you will start to retain water. Once your body starts retaining water, the process will be difficult to reverse. If your urine is dark in colour, you probably need to drink more than what you have been.

Exercise will make you hungry

It is senseless trying to exercise if you do not change your diet. Your body, because you are working out, will require more energy to burn fat so you might experience an increased appetite. Unless you choose to stock up on nutritious foods, you will not lose weight. Working out does not give you a licence to pig out.

The hidden sugar and fat in energy bars and drinks

Sports drinks, energy bars and even fruit juices are often high in calories, so make sure you drink water instead. Many are fooled by labels which claim drinks help when you’re doing sports and other physical activity, but are actually high in sugar. Some may even dehydrate your body.

There are many benefits to exercising so if the weight is not coming off as fast as you had hoped, do not abandon your new regime. You will soon feel better and look more vibrant if you stick at it and avoid these pitfalls.
