We live in times of advanced medical care and prevention, rather than cure, is now possible when it comes to many conditions. Early detection of conditions like breast cancer, heart disease and ovarian cancer can literally save your life. It may not be a whole lot of fun seeing a healthcare specialist for regular check-ups, but in some cases a five-minute test could help you stay healthy well into old age. Find out the five tests everyone should have.
Lipid profile
This is a test best performed first thing in the morning, which will give you a cholesterol reading. Cholesterol levels serve as a marker for heart disease and strokes and can easily be managed with the right diet and medication.
Pap smear
This test used to check for any changes in cervical cells and can show infection, abnormal cells and cancer. It is recommended that a pap smear be done every second year once you are 21 and it is advised you not have sex 48 hours before being tested.
Blood sugar
With the current rise in type 2 diabetes in the UK, this is certainly a test you should not go without. Doctors suggest having blood sugar tested twice annually as a matter of course and more frequently should you at any time start to display any symptoms of diabetes.
Mammogram
Research studies have shown that the best time to schedule a mammogram is within the first 14 days of your menstrual cycle as this is when you are likely to get the most accurate result. The test is not routine for women under 40 unless they have a close relative who suffered from breast cancer. It’s recommended that, no matter your age, you self-examine your breasts every month.
Blood pressure
This test is particularly important where there is a family history of high blood pressure. It is best to perform the test when relaxed and it’s important to know high blood pressure cannot be diagnosed after one abnormal reading. You would need to monitor your blood pressure over two weeks.
