Ordinary table salt can actually increase the water hardness, which is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve in using dishwasher salt in the first place. It is possible it might also ruin the machine, so I&#039;d stop if I were you.

Dishwasher salt should actually be cheaper than regular salt (or at least as expensive), and even if you live in a hard water location and use your dishwasher daily, a 1kg bag should last at least a few weeks.
