Dishwasher Salt: You Must use the Proper Type and Cannot Use Table Salt

Today we find a lot of dishwashers that comes with built in softener. These dishwashers use dishwater salt that helps to make hard water soft which is essential for cleaning your utensils. Dishwater salt is a type of sodium chloride salt that helps in recharging the ion-exchange resins and their particles are larger than normal salt particles. The dishwater salts contain minimal amount of manganese and iron and it dissolve slowly, but this does not means it will clog your dishwasher’s softener unit. You should not be fooled by the tall claims made by the certain detergents manufacturers that say that you don’t need to use dishwater salts if you use their detergent, as these detergents contain high concentration of phosphates that can damage your utensils in the long run.

The long list of highly efficient dishwashers available in the market that comes with dishwater salt compartments includes Bosch SGS45C02GB, Bosch SGV46M03GB, Smeg DF 1255W, Whirlpool ADG644, Hotpoint LFT114, Bosch SGV53E33GB and Candy CDI22E10 etc. These dishwashers are highly energy efficient and have got energy rating A. They come with different place settings as per the model you purchase and come with 3 wash temperature settings. These dishwashers have very minimum noise emission and take up less space in the kitchen leaving you enough space to put other things in your kitchen. In place of dishwater salts you should never use detergent or common salt in these dishwaters’ salt compartment, as this would damage the water softener unit of your washing machines.

  1. I Have used ordinary table salt in my dishwasher,to save money. In total i have used 2kgs will this ruin the machine?

  2. Hi Tina,

Ordinary table salt can actually increase the water hardness, which is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve in using dishwasher salt in the first place. It is possible it might also ruin the machine, so I’d stop if I were you.

Dishwasher salt should actually be cheaper than regular salt (or at least as expensive), and even if you live in a hard water location and use your dishwasher daily, a 1kg bag should last at least a few weeks.

    Best,
    Jay
