Killer Dust

Dust can be a nuisance and make even the tidiest of homes look messy. To add to this, your woes are multiplied if you are allergic to dust. You can have a dust- and mite-free room for yourself, which is a must if you are prone to allergies.

It is fairly simple if you follow the given steps:

- Keep your bedroom free of all junk. Make sure that there is no extra stuff, which would attract mites or dust. Those tiny crevices in over crowded rooms are a great draw for dust particles.

- Check the humidity levels in the room. The drier the room, the easier it will be to keep it dust-free. Get a humidity gauge to keep a check on humidity levels. Make sure the level is below 50%. Dust mite allergens cannot survive in dry air.

- Use a good vacuum cleaner to keep your room clean. Using one twice a week is very effective. Use the onboard tools to reach those inaccessible corners and edges. Do not use a duster as it merely reallocates the dust from one surface to another.

- Do not keep many rugs or carpets in the room. This might not be possible in the winter, but do try to keep floor covering to a minimum. Even when you are vacuuming you can use swiffers to keep down the dust.

- Wash bedclothes in hot water (60°C) so that dust mites are destroyed. To make doubly sure you can use tannic acid or a commercial cleaner to keep the clothes clean.

- Get the ducts cleaned professionally every three years. You must choose the duct cleaner with care. Make sure it is certified.

- Cover the bed with mite proof covers; you can also vacuum the bed twice a week to ensure ideal hygienic conditions. A vapor steam cleaner can also be used to remove obstinate mites.
