Yes, carpets do need professional treatment in order to have that brand new look. It is, however, neither possible nor feasible to have it cleaned professionally all the time. Certain measures can be taken at home to ensure the carpets retain their fresh look and sometimes the cleaning at home can look better than the professional job.

If possible buy or rent a steam-cleaning machine. It is excellent for cleaning and in fact recommended over the dry extraction method. These machines are hot water extraction machines and leave no residue in the carpets that may attract dirt later.
It is advisable to vacuum the carpet before cleaning, and to of course use a reliable vacuum cleaner like the Dyson DC21 Motorhead. This reduces the number of passes over the carpet. Too many passes tend to make the area wet which can lead to fungus or molding and an unpleasant odor. The small rented machines are not very effective at sucking out the moisture, so be careful.
Use very hot water for cleaning. The hotter the water the sooner it dries. Apart from this it will kill any mites that might have built their home in your carpet.
If there is a stubborn area, which does not clean, do not pass the machine over it too many times. You will only aggravate it. It means that professional help is needed and it is best to leave it to them.
The trick to get that perfect finish is to dry the carpet quickly. Choose a day, which is not very humid. To facilitate the drying make sure there are many fans and the room is open .The sooner you dry it the better will be the effect.
