DIY: How to tame a wild garden

Life can become overwhelming, and sometimes we let certain things slide. Be it our health, fashion sense, or even our homes. A garden is especially easy to let slip into a state of alarm if we rarely spend time in it due to heavy commitments at work and at home. When it’s time to sort out that jungle, it can seem initially like an impossible task, but take a deep breath as these three steps will save your garden.

Step one: planning is everything

Whenever people see a high volume of work to be done, they get paralysed by how overwhelming it seems. This is, incidentally, a major source of procrastination. So, with an overwhelmingly wild garden, you need to break the work into separate smaller chunks, instead of looking at it like one big mess. Often a task that takes little effort like mowing the lawn and plucking weeds makes a remarkable overall difference.

Now create a timeline you will stick to, whether it is over a weekend or a few weeks, so as to recover your garden’s naturally beautiful state methodically.

Step two: check you have the right tools

Once you’ve overcome the procrastination and are ready to actually working on your wild garden, the worst thing is discovering you don’t have the right tools for the job. This could kill all motivation.

Below is a handy checklist for the basic tools you’ll need to tend the whole garden:

1)      Shovel and garden fork

2)      Lawnmower

3)      Clippers

4)      Rake

5)      Wheel barrow

Between these five tools, matched with a few refuse bags for waste, almost every task in your wild garden can be dealt with.

Step three: getting busy

Roll up your sleeves, fire up some good music, put on sunscreen and keep a water bottle close by and get down to the work. Since you’ve planned carefully for it you won’t feel overwhelmed, and you can have the whole family lend a hand, making it a fun bonding exercise.

Trust us. This approach is far cheaper than hiring a garden specialist.
