Is there a patch of garden that brightens up your area, now’s the time to share it. A city’s small green sections are a vital part of the area’s character, and while they don’t go unnoticed, they’re often unrecognised. The Green Corners Awards are an interesting new take on gardening competitions – it allows members of the London public to nominate their favourite green spaces for recognition based on various criteria. The competition’s open to anyone, so the London public can get to work deciding which category their favourite Green Corner falls into and nominating it for an award.
Not quite a gardening competition
The Green Corners Awards might be a competition that involves gardens, but the difference comes in because the competition’s entrants don’t have to have gardens. Any patch of green is eligible for entry, and there’s also the option of nominating a public space. The competition is all about showcasing the green bits of London that are often overlooked, so options are wide open. This green initiative is all about making a difference – and that means being different, too.

Entry into the competition is easy, and while it’s a great opportunity for those interested in gardening to show off their skills, anyone interested in a certain green corner is welcome to make a nomination too. All that you need to do to get involved in this green initiative is take some photographs of the Green Corner you’d like to nominate, along with the name and address of both the nominator and the owner of the area, and a description in 500 words of why it should win an award. The entries can be sent green.corners@conservationfoundation.co.uk. You can also write a little about interesting flowers and herbs in the Green Corner, as well as insects and birdlife that can be found there.
And, you can enter at any time

The competition is open all year round, and that’s because the competition’s organisers realise that not every one of London’s green corners is at its best at the same time of year. Encouraging people to make London more beautiful is also part of the initiative, and making the competition an all-year-round event will hopefully mean that the gardens resulting from the competition will be diverse and cater to different seasons. That means more biodiversity and a healthier, better-looking city all year round.
Plenty of options
A large number of categories is available to those who want to nominate a green corner for the competition. There’s ‘Community Green Corners’, ‘Green Corners for Health and Well-being’, ‘Edible Green Corners’, ‘Pavement Green Corners’, ‘School Green Corners’, ‘Muse Green Corners’, and ‘Water-wise Green Corners’. There are also the ‘Young Londoners’, ‘Sacred Spaces’, and ‘On the Move’ categories. With this many options open, anyone can find a gorgeous green space that deserves some recognition – so why not make a nomination?
