A turf lawn is a great investment, as laying down one of these allows an instant healthy, green lawn that should last well. Laying turf is a relatively easy process, provided that you have the right gardening accessories to use and that you go about it in the right way. It keeps things simple and will get your garden looking lush and green.

When should I lay turf?

The simple answer to this question is, not more than 24 hours after it’s been delivered. Leaving the turf rolls for more than 48 hours after they’ve been delivered means risking the chance that they’ll dry out before they can be used – diminishing your chance for the best lawn possible. In other words, make sure that conditions are right in your garden for rolling out the turf before it arrives. Turf is best laid in moderately moist conditions – this generally means early spring, when it’s still rainy but not damp enough to cause the lawn to become waterlogged.

Plan the shape of your lawn carefully – consider whether it will it be a simple square lawn, or if it will need shaping around the edges. A very steep slope isn’t ideal for laying out a lawn, so consider levelling areas like this in your garden, and make sure you’ve chosen an area that has good drainage conditions. The best lawn will grow on soil that’s made up of medium loam, so consider adding compost to soil to get it more like this. If you’re replacing an existing lawn, dig it up to a depth of around three inches before making preparations to the soil.

Get rolling

Turf comes in rolls, so your job is relatively easy – all you have to do is roll it out in the prepared area. Right before laying out the lawn in your garden, use a rake to distribute a general-purpose fertiliser over the site. Lay out the lengths of turf in straight rows and remember that they’re unlikely to fill the space exactly – you’ll need to trim the last one along its length as well as at its end to make it neat. Don’t be worried about small gaps between the turf – fill them with turf, and they’ll soon grow over.

To produce the best lawn possible, your newly laid turf will need some special care to begin with. Avoid moving wheelbarrows over the lawn immediately after laying it down, and keep children and pets from playing on it for the first few weeks. The lawn will need to be kept moist with regular watering, especially if it was laid in dryer weather, and it shouldn’t be mowed until it’s been allowed to grow quite significantly. Once the turf lawn has been growing in your garden for a few months you’ll see the fruits of your labour: you’ll have a strong, established, and beautiful lawn to enjoy.
