Vegetables of your labour! Basics of vegetable gardening.

The saying goes ‘love thy labor’, but how about ‘eat thy labor’? There is nothing like doing things yourself and enjoying the results rather than buying ready made produce. Be it cooking or sewing, the real fun is in doing it yourself. So why not cook with home-grown vegetables? It will save you the labor of going to the grocery and save you from the rocketing food prices. So here are some vegetable gardening basics that will help you grow fresh plump vegetables at home.

  • The first thing that you need to do before starting a vegetable garden is chalk out a rough plan to divide your garden strategically. You need to make sure that you choose the right places in your garden for the right vegetables as some vegetables require more sunlight and some require more space.
  • You should leave some space for walking also so that you do not end up stepping on your budding seeds.
  • Do not go on planting too much of the same veggie as one or two plants yield enough of one vegetable for your household.
  • Keep your garden free from insects and pests by using insecticides and pesticides but make sure you don’t use them at a distance of less than 3 inches.
  • Make sure each plant has enough space to grow.
  • Try growing more smaller plants, as smaller the veggie size, the less space it will require.
  • Plant both fast and slow growing plants to save space as by the time slow growing veggies are ready, the fast maturing one should have already been harvested.
