Dyeing your hair at home can be an inexpensive solution to salon colour treatments and it gives you the opportunity to do things in your own time, but it is a risky business. There are a couple things you will want to consider when dyeing your hair yourself. The colour, the condition of your hair and the type of dye are all factors that can influence how your hair turns out in the end.

The hair dye

If you are dyeing your hair for the first time or you want a drastic change consider a non-permanent hair colour that will wash out with time. A permanent dye will hold its colour better than a non-permanent one but it will make roots more evident as your hair grows. Permanent dyes can also contain ammonia which will damage the hair if it is dyed on a regular basis.

The colour

The general rule is to pick a colour that is not further than two shades different from your natural shade. If you want to go lighter you may want to consider buying two boxes of hair colour to achieve the desired effect. Always look at the colour chart on the back or side of the box rather than the hair colour of the model at the front. Always buy hair colour from reputable companies like Garnier and L’Oréal to avoid disaster.

Dyeing your hair

First wear gloves and old clothes or a towel over your shoulders in case of spillage. Ensure your hair is relatively clean and brush it before you apply the colour. Separate your hair into sections and clip away the parts you are not working on for even coverage. Follow the instructions on the box and use the hair colour straight away after mixing. If it is your first time dyeing your hair ensure you do a strand test as well as an allergen test before proceeding. Never use your hair dye on your eyebrows or eyelashes as you can seriously damage your eyes in the process.
