Perfecting the smoky eye

A smoky eye looks great at night and can even look fantastic at the office. The key to creating the perfect smoky eye is in the blending and colour choice – you want to create a flawless, line free effect in multiple shades. Pair your smoky eye with neutral lipstick for a striking,  but not overdone, look. Below are step by step instructions on how to create the perfect smoky eye.

Preparing the eye

Make sure the eye area is clear and clean of any other make-up. Line the lids with a base or powder to ensure that the shadow sticks to the lid. Make sure your base is dry before moving on to the next step.

Eyeliner

First apply your eyeliner above your upper eyelash line – thickening the line towards the inside of the eye. The eyeliner should be the darkest colour you apply, with brown hues working well during the day and purple or gold looking great at a party.

Blending the colour

Blend your eyeliner colour on to your bottom lash – use a pencil or a brush to apply and then smudge your finger over the line. Now apply a light colour to your brow bone and blend it with a darker colour below the crease of your eye-lid. Blend the dark colour into your eyeliner so that you don’t have any harsh breaks in colour, which will ruin your perfect smoky eye. You could even add some of the dark shadow to the bottom eyeliner for a dramatic effect.

Finish it up

Check your work and remove any excess make-up with a Q-tip dipped in make-up remover. If you have short eyelashes curl your lashes and then finish the look off with several coats of mascara or even attach fake eyelashes like the ones frequently seen on Lady Gaga. And there you have it, a few simple steps to achieve the perfect smoky eye makeup effect.
