Some women laud their school formals as their most fashionable nights but for the rest of us, they are part of those embarrassing pictures that we tuck at the back of our photo albums. For those young ladies currently going through the process which may form part of their embarrassing moments that friends retell at every social function, we have advice to stop the humiliation passing on to this next generation.

A hairytale evening

One thing that all experts agree on when deciding what hairstyle to go with for your big day is not to go for the current trends. Perms were all the rage with teenagers in the eighties, the same way that the beehive was the popular do to have in the fifties but now in 2010 when those mothers and grandmothers look back at their photographs they often wish they had gone with a more classic look such as a simple smooth and sleek look, an updo or soft curls. Luckily, not only will these styles make you elegant but they are also cheaper and easier to do. Enter the modern phenomena of hairstyling: the ghd. Not only do ghd’s look super stylish but they have a reputation of reliability that most politicians would die for. The ghds also come in different sizes with different functions but the standard ghds all straighten and curl hair almost to perfection.

A dress to die for

Choosing the perfect dress is always a tricky situation as whether the dress will still look good twenty years later is the last thing on one’s mind. Everyone wants to choose a dress which suits the wearer in colour and style, timelessness is just an extra bonus. Black is a colour which suits all skin tones, is slimming and will always be in fashion. You can also never fail in jewel toned dresses such as emerald green and ruby red. A good idea is also to go to dress stores and try on different colours and styles of dresses to see what suits you best. Remember to flaunt your best assets such as wearing a short dress if you like your legs or a strapless dress if you’ve got great shoulders. A simple tip to becoming the belle of the ball as well as looking smart is to follow stars such as Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightly and opt for a classic look over current trends which may look tacky in later years.

Finishing off that look

Make-up is an important and underrated part of one’s look. Make-up can make or break your style with the wrong colour lipstick or too much eye shadow taking you from the Kate Hudson look to something akin to Lady Gaga. If you are doing your own make-up it is a good idea to purchase L’Oreal’s Star Secret Quad Pros where the shades of eye shadows are numbered and they correspond with a diagram that shows you where to apply the shades. To enhance any lip colour use gloss to give it that extra shine. If you are unsure about anything visit the consultants at your favourite beauty house, may it be MAC or Rimmel, and ask them if you can try from the testers to see what suits you.

It’s all about elegant, timeless, faultless composition.
