Epilation and electrolysis are sometimes confused, and they do have a lot in common. While the hair removal method is different, both can be painful and are relatively expensive, but with impressive and long-lasting results. For anyone who can take some pain for the sake of beauty and who wants hair removal that doesn’t have to be repeated over and over again constantly, processes like these might be the solution. So, what’s the better option of the two?
How do they work?
Epilators work like lots of tiny tweezers, attaching to your hairs and pulling them out at the root. In this way, the process is quite similar to waxing, but it’s often a little slower. Electrolysis involves a device that sends an electric charge into each hair follicle, damaging it permanently to reduce hair growth.
Pain
With both epilation and electrolysis, it’s worth facing facts: these methods of hair removal are painful. If you struggle to grit your teeth and think of the long-term results, ask your doctor about taking a painkiller or using an anaesthetic cream before removing large areas of hair or having hair removal performed on sensitive areas.

Electrolysis comes out tops here: while both epilators and electrolysis give relatively long-lasting results because they remove hair at the root rather than the surface, it’s electrolysis that works on the hair follicle to keep hair away for a really sustained period.
Cost
Buying one might be costly, but in the long run an epilator will probably save you money – you’ll have the machine to use at home whenever you need to, and once you’re performing skilful hair removal yourself, you’ll feel that it was worth the investment. There’s a similar logic to electrolysis – while the sessions might be costly, they’re long-lasting – but epilators probably turn out to be the cheaper option of the two.
When it comes to a choice between electrolysis and electric epilators, there’s no clear winner – both can be painful, and while epilators are far more cost-effective, electrolysis is often longer-lasting. Decide what it is that matters most to you before you make your choice.
