If you’re tired of nicking your legs shaving every day, hate the smell of hair removal creams, and can’t afford a wax every few weeks, hair epilators are the perfect solution for long lasting hair removal. Using an epilator will save you time – one use will keep your legs silky and smooth for weeks. The drawback? Pain. But you’ll soon get used to it, and the results will be worth it.
How hair epilators work
Hair epilators work like tweezers, pulling hairs out from the roots. This is why they’re a long lasting option for hair removal, similar to waxing. They use a tight spring which spins or vibrates as you run it over your skin. This allows the spring to catch the hair, and pull it out quickly.
How do I use an epilator?

It’s really easy to use an epilator. Make sure the area you’re going to epilate is clean and dry (don’t moisturise before you use your epilator). Move the epilator slowly over the skin in the direction of hair growth. After you epilate, use a soothing lotion. Try a lotion with aloe vera to help calm any red skin. And voila! A beautifully smooth result in minutes.
Bumps and ingrown hairs
Using hair epilators, just like waxing, can result in bumps and ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are hairs that curl back inside the hair follicle, rather than growing through the surface of the skin. But this can be avoided if you exfoliate regularly. Use an exfoliating scrub a few times a week, or a lotion or soap with salicylic acid, and try tea tree oil if any ingrown hairs get infected.
Take care of your skin
The key to a great result when shaving, waxing or using a hair epilator, is moisturising. Dry, flaky skin is not a good look. If your skin tends to get dry, invest in a good moisturising lotion, and drink plenty of water. Hydration is the key to beautiful skin.
If you can get over the pain, using an epilator is a great way to get rid of unwanted hair. Prices start at around £20, so you won’t be breaking the bank, either.
