Adult acne, even if it’s mild, can be a very annoying – and sometimes embarrassing – problem. Covering up with concealer can help disguise outbreaks, but does nothing to solve the root problem. There are some simple things you can do for light acne, though, without resorting to expensive medication. These include using a quality facial cleanser and following a facial care regime, as well as using exfoliating products. It’s also important to use alcohol-free face care products, so that you don’t dry out your skin and make it more susceptible to acne. Finally, many experts agree that a healthy diet is critical in achieving healthy looking skin.
Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse
The most important thing anyone with mild acne can do is have a good face care regime that includes an oil-free cleanser. Cleansing acne-prone skin is vital, and exfoliating can help unclog pores. There is nothing worse for acne than going to bed with unwashed skin. Using a cleanser with salicylic acid will exfoliate the skin, but be sure choose a mild one that won’t irritate gentle skin.
Oil and alcohol-free
While cleanser should be oil-free, it mustn’t dry out the skin, and it’s best not to use toners that contain alcohol. Neutrogena’s Visibly Clear range is good. Even with mild acne, it is important to moisturise the skin, but moisturiser must also be oil-free. La Roche’s Pore Refining Lotion is a good buy.

Many nutritionists and other alternative therapists say that a good diet will help clear up acne. Things to avoid are caffeine (in colas and coffee), fried, fatty foods, and chocolate. Foods that you want to eat are fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and fatty fish.
Cover it up
While foundation isn’t a solution to light acne, it does help the acne sufferer feel more confident, and many brands will also protect the skin with an SPF (sun protection factor) and antioxidants, which help delay ageing. Be sure to use a light, oil-free foundation, and match it to your skin carefully.

Even mild acne can cause scarring, and the best defence against long-lasting blemishes is and scars is to use a good sunscreen. Like all the other products for spot-prone skin, this should be light and oil-free, and not block the pores. If your foundation doesn’t come with an SPF, be sure to sue sunscreen every day.
While the serious acne sufferer should pay a visit to the dermatologist for expert advice, there are some things people with light acne can do to help them clear up their skin and feel better about themselves.
