Opinions are divided at New York Fashion Week on whether to blush, or not to blush. There are two camps when it comes to this season’s looks so far: those in favour of the blushed look, and those who emphasise the lips and eyes. Whilst not necessarily mutually exclusive, those who preferred to accentuate the eyes and lips, also preferred to minimise the amount of blush. Charlotte Tilbury of MAC, for example, feels the cheeks can still be complemented without using any blush whatsoever. Of course, this opinion doesn’t gel at all with other major fashion designers, but you can read on for their take on the situation.
Blushed
In his autumn/winter show, Thakoon Panichgul used strong eyebrows and peachy cheeks to complement his heavy furs. Also for blushers was Luca Luca make-up artist James Kaliardos, saying this was the season for the cheek to shine. He even uses blusher himself, and recommends pressing a face cream into the cheek to add life to the face.

At DKNY, Charlotte Tilbury of MAC said that this was season was not so much about the cheek, but all about the lips and eyes. She said cheekbones should be beautifully contoured, but without any blusher at all. Her look was 1920s-inspired, with taupe eyes and wine-stained lips.
Get the look: sweet and rosy
Try Guerlain’s Cherry Blossom range, which give cheeks and lips a rosy, baby-doll look. Guerlain’s creative director, Olivier Echaudemaison, describes the look has having an Oriental twist. The peachy blusher actually suits most skin tones, and adds a glow to winter’s pale complexions.

To recreate Charlotte Tilbury’s look with smoky eyes, deep lips and pale skin, try Eye Kohl in Smolder and Fluidline in Blacktrack from MAC, and LipMix in crimson and burgundy, blended into the lip. Burgundy lip pencil applied around the lips to will give an up-to-date over-drawn effect.
The jury’s out and it’s up to you whether you choose to opt for a bold MAC-inspired look, with smoky eyes and accentuated lips, or a softer look with blusher to add a glow to winter skin. Either way, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to stocking up your make-up bag for spring.
