Mastering the retro look

The 80s are back and everyone from celebrities to their children is rocking the retro look. The retro look can be loud with coloured tights and graphic tees or understated and adorable with lace tutus and ribbon headbands. Mastering this retro look can be difficult as there is a fine line between looking chic and modern and looking outdated and ridiculous. So look to the past when purchasing clothing in the future but make sure you know how to work that retro style!

Rummage through your parents’ wardrobes

Your parents may be hiding some great retro pieces at the back of their wardrobe or in boxes in the garage. Timeless classics to look out for are high-heeled boots, waistcoats, mini-skirts, over-sized jumpers, large belts, cute cardigans and chunky jewellery. Bright colours are not to be avoided when mastering the retro look and a too big t-shirt can always be cinched in with a belt or paired with skinny jeans.

Go all out

The retro look requires a sense of abandonment and this loud, brash style is bound to get you noticed. Don’t be afraid to play with loud colours – you can get away with wearing a variety of clashing colours. Animal prints are also very much a part of the retro look but to keep it classy make sure your clothes are well tailored and of good quality. Cropped trousers and tanks are also in but should never be paired together.

The final touches

If the retro look is not for you consider bringing it into your look with small touches – like a pair of bright wedges, 80s style sunglasses or some fun, plastic jewellery. Keep your hair loose and long as the retro look cries out to be casual or tie it up in a high pony or braid with a ribbon. For your make-up keep it simple with some black eyeliner or red lipstick and you are good to go!
