The average woman is guilty of a few basic make-up mistakes and it is no mistake that the professionals are called artists. Applying make-up is more art than science but there are a few basic principles that can help every woman in her beauty routine. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure your look is picture perfect.

Base beautiful

Foundation is intended to mask flaws, not look like a mask. Two things you need to consider before buying foundation are colour and coverage. The colour must match your skin tone perfectly so that it doesn’t look like you’re wearing foundation at all, while you need to choose the right level of coverage for your specific needs. Ask a professional at the make-up counter for help when choosing foundation – that’s what they’re there for.

Basic brows

Your eyebrows are hugely important, as they frame your face. It’s worth having your brows professionally shaped, even if you just do it once and then maintain the shape yourself. Don’t go overboard and keep stepping back from the mirror while plucking to check progress. If your brows are light you may even want to consider a tint either at a salon or using a home kit.

Luscious lashes

Avoid clumps and blobs by ensuring you don’t hang onto your mascara too long. You should replace your mascara every six weeks. Anything older is not only unhygienic but also tends to clump you lashes.

Blushing beautiful

Avoid bright and unnatural looking cheeks by keeping your blush subtle. Use a soft fluffy brush, then smile and dust blush on the apples of the cheek.

Smokey eyes

Avoid wearing too much eye shadow and using the wrong colours for your skin tone. The best bet is to keep your palette natural and to use colours similar to your eye colour. Start with the lightest shade under your brow bone and get darker a little closer to your lash line.

Kissing right

Bleeding lips are the biggest make-up faux pas. Try sticking to natural shades during the day and when you choose more intense shades application is key. To stop feathering use a lip pencil in the same shade as your lip colour and use gloss only in the middle of the lips as gloss alone is not suitable if feathering is a concern.

Best hand forward

Nobody likes the look of chipped or poorly applied nail varnish so make the effort to spend some time perfecting your manicure. Use a base coat to protect your nails, two coats of colour and for a flawless effect finish with top coat.
