British designers have a history of being on the cutting edge of fashion – one only has to think back to Mary Quant and what she did with miniskirts in the 1960s. And then there are the likes of Christopher Bailey, Paul Smith, John Richmond and John Galliano. As for two of our favourite female designers, who hasn’t heard of Stella McCartney and the iconic Vivienne Westwood? Neither are ever likely to go out of fashion from the looks of things.
Vivienne Westwood – punk attitude
Punk owes much to the outspoken Dame Vivienne Westwood who remains a force to be reckoned with in British fashion ‑ with her men’s wear shows in Milan and women’s wear shows in Paris. Choose British describes Westwood as the ‘Punk’s Tailor’, saying that ‘Westwood, along with Malcolm McLaren, invented the punk look in the 1980s and has been named one of the six most influential designers of all time. The OBE winner has won a host of awards including twice being named British Fashion Designer of the year. Westwood has had her own travelling exhibition as part of the Victoria and Albert Museum, which toured the world for seven years.’
Stella McCartney
Daughter of Paul McCartney, Stella McCartney graduated from Central Saint Martins and has since launched her own clothing line and won London’s Designer of the Year Award. She opened her first shop in 2003 in New York and her stores can now be found in London and Los Angeles. Choose British says that some people are of the opinion that her ‘meteoric rise to fame in the fashion world’ is due to her father but that Stella McCartney ‘has proved herself within the fashion world’ while working as the creative director at Chloe and launching her own clothing line.
