Silver jewellery is an integral part of our lives and is indispensably connected to our culture and traditions. The rich and powerful have long used it as a means to flaunt their supremacy and to make a fashion statement. The great strength of silver is that it looks compatible and chic with a multitude of colours and designs. Fashion conscious people can easily customise it to get that ‘desirous’ look they are craving for. It is, however, important to keep them clean and glowing or else you will end up making a poor fashion statement. Here are some tips that will help you to maintain its shine and beauty.
Preventive Measures
Jewellery, in general provides the finishing touches to your outfit and should be worn only after you have finished bathing and grooming. Products that are a part of your beauty routine are usually harmful to the jewellery and may also cause a residue on its surface. It is even more important to keep them away from harsh chemicals which are far more harmful. Particularly keep them away from chlorine, its main enemy. It is also advisable to remove your jewellery when doing strenuous activities.
Storage
Store them in a polyethylene plastic zip-lock bag or an air-tight container with a tarnish-prevention cloth. It will delay the tarnishing process. Something like the Haba Moschee Jewellery case or another container designed to store valuables would do nicely. Make sure that each item is separately stored in a dark and cool place to prevent friction. Keep the jewellery away from wooden surfaces, which usually contain acids, and also stay away from wrapping them in newspapers and aluminium foil.
Cleaning
The fastest and most economic way to clean silver is with a mild liquid detergent and a soft brass. You can also use warm water for better results. Use an up and down motion while cleaning to avoid scratches. Dry the jewellery using a 100% cotton cloth before storing. Products that contain chemicals and acids should be avoided while cleaning. In case of severe tarnish, use a silver spray polish or pastes.
If the jewellery item has no gemstones you can use an Ultrasound cleaner, otherwise it is sensible to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
