Organising your Garage

For those of us who own a car, it is most fortunate if we also have a garage. A good and functional garage not only protects your car from undesirable elements, but also is the space for your automobile repairing. A spacious and organised garage can let you attend to your car in a convenient manner. For example, you can avoid scraping ice off the windshield and snow off the top, by parking the car in the garage where the temperature is controlled and the car protected. It is, however, frequently observed that in most households the garage becomes the dumping place for indiscriminate objects. It finally ends up being a giant storage space where you can’t find anything, never mind even park your car due to the lack of space!

Here are some valuable suggestions to end your dilemma:

Start off by cleaning the garage. Go through the items piled up in the garage and remove the ones you feel are no longer required. Put all the screws, nuts and bolts, and sort them into bottles or cans to be stored on a shelf. Phase out your tools according to their size. It is handy if you have a separate tool box for each one of them. Carefully put hazardous and poisonous substances in a safe place. It is sensible to lock up items like pesticides, paint thinner, etc. in a cabinet.

To increase space, hang your bicycles upside down from the ceiling. You can easily get bike hangers at your local hardware or bicycle store for the purpose.

There should be a sufficient number of shelves in the garage, either open or with doors. Floor-to-ceiling shelves are an option. It is usually convenient to have separate sections for each family member so that they each have somewhere to keep their personal items.

Put car care items, such as soap, wax, oil, and rags together on one self. The antifreeze on the other hand should be placed with other hazardous substances locked in a cabinet.

Finally, to bring back the glow of the garage, you may use a power washer or high pressure washer, such as the Draper 41401, on the floor and walls. You can also try painting the concrete, which may also seal the floor.
