Positioning the Aquarium
Ever thought of having an aquarium? It looks beautiful and the vibrant fish inside will definitely be a focal point of attention. Regardless of your reason for wanting an aquarium, before you decide anything you should think carefully about where you are going to place it. Before you buy one envisage where you will place it and how it will fit in with the decor. This will help you to decide the size and shape of the aquarium.
Before selecting the place keep the following in mind:
Light
For an aquarium light is very important, there should be light but not direct light. Direct sunlight can harm the aquarium as it might get over heated. This also encourages growth of algae, which is fatal for the fish.
Cold Air
Make sure the aquarium is not in line with drafts coming into a room. Ensure that the temperature and air is stable. Fish are susceptible to cold air and can be harmed.
Power
It might seem frivolous but it is important. It is frustrating to have a beautiful aquarium and then no power to point to plug it in! Make sure that either you plan to put it next to power point or get one installed before you get it home.
Support
This is the most important. Do not underestimate the weight of the aquarium. A ten-gallon tank weighs about 100 pounds and the bigger tanks will weigh even more. For a small aquarium you may use the support of a heavy piece of furniture but for a bigger one you need an especially built support. TV racks are actually a great solution as they are designed to support heavy objects. Moreover, sleek TV furniture, like the designer Sony SU-42SX3, are also designed to showcase and display the object they are supporting in a prominent manner. Another option would be to place it on the floor. It is the safest but make sure that it is not a place where there is too much crossing.
Apart from this the tank needs cushioning. The ideal cushioning is with a sheet of cork you may, however, even use a wood or metal plate. This will protect the surface of the support
The last point is the most practical and the important one. The aquarium needs water so make sure it is next to a water outlet.
