Natural wood is one of the most versatile materials. Not only is it easily shaped but it is also available in many different textures, grains and colours. Add to this that every piece of wood is unique, even if it is from the same tree. Besides the warm appearance of wood, there is the soft feel of it. ‘Who can resist sliding their hands over the surface of a polished oak tabletop?’ ask Alan and Gill Bridgewater in their book Encyclopedia of Woodworking.
The rewards of working with wood
Woodworking is a satisfying endeavour. ‘Removing the shavings with a smoothing plane, scooping out hollows with a gouge, steam-bending bow shapes, cutting perfect joints and achieving a fine finish are pleasures not to be missed,’ say the Bridgewaters. There’s a certain pride that comes from admiring your own workmanship too.
Besides the enjoyment factor and the creative possibilities, making your own wooden furniture can save you heaps of money. Also, the quality of your finished product is likely to surpass anything you’re likely to find in a glossy superstore.
The basic requirements
‘Woodworking is not really a “kitchen-table” craft’ say the Bridgewaters. But that doesn’t mean to say that it’s an expensive or demanding pastime. ‘Power tools are getting cheaper all the time and it is amazing what you can make with just a jigsaw and a router.’
They advise to buy prepared timber if you have limited space or if you don’t wish to handle big pieces of wood. The same goes for those who don’t want to invest in heavy machinery. ‘On the other hand, if you enjoy buying tools and machines, there is a tantalising array of options.’
Get to know your woods
As the Bridgewaters explain, ‘the best way to enjoy your woodworking journey is to have a clear understanding of wood’s possibilities.’ Once you have a feel for wood, you’ll be well on your way.
With a willingness to learn, it shouldn’t be long before you’re mastering techniques like turning, carving and steam-bending. There are countless numbers of woodworking projects to choose from in their book, complete with step-by-step instructions.
