In an effort to live lives that are environmentally aware, many people buy and use products that are natural, organic and less prone to contain chemical and animal by-products. This often means shunning plastics, synthetic fabrics and materials as well as luxuries like fur and leather clothing and accessories. While fur is still a no-no, leather has made a comeback in an eco-friendly version. It is not a joke; you can now wear beautiful belts, coats and shoes manufactured with eco-friendly leather.
Indulge while being kind to the Earth
Eco-friendly leather hides have been introduced by a leather finishing company based in Los Angeles, California. These products are not only environmentally conscious but also sustainable.
The hides are perfect for interior design products and furniture as well as the fashion industry.
What’s so different?
Modern tanning methods involve the use of heavy metals such as chrome which render leather more durable. Unfortunately, these metals and chemicals contaminate our environment.
Eco-friendly leather finishing process use natural vegetable products and waxes to ensure its pliability. The natural extract comes from sustainable Mimosa trees grown on farms.
The argument made by organisations such as PETA is that synthetic leather alternatives like pleather and faux leather are better for us and the environment. What is not taken into account is the short lifespan of these products made from non-biodegradable PVC and plastics. They are classified as human carcinogens and are also toxic to our water and air.
And despite the efforts of PETA and other ‘green’ organisations, people will continue to eat meat, so why not use the skin of animals that have been slaughtered for food? Using eco-friendly tanning methods will ensure that no resources are wasted while providing quality consumer products that have a minimal impact on our planet.
