We all want our homes to look absolutely stunningly well put together, but not everybody can afford to hire a world-class six-figure interior designer to come spruce their space up. Whether you’ve gone all bohemian, shabby chic or quite enjoy keeping it classic, your place always needs a little revamping. Below is an interior design crash course that will have your home looking better irrespective of the style resonating in your four walls.

It’s all about a theme!

The problem with most homes and rooms is that they’re put together haphazardly. People see a piece of furniture they like and so they buy it, not thinking about how it will look in relation to the other items in the room. What’s just as bad is not thinking how certain rooms look in relation to other rooms. Don’t just purchase. Decide on a theme, whether it is industrial, classic, or contemporary monotone in style, and then kit out your home accordingly. Theme is the ABCs of this interior design course.
Colours and lighting

Leading on from theme is how you light your home, when it comes to how much natural light gets in, how your artificial lighting is set up and how you’ve coloured your walls. A well-lit home is always superior to a dark home, as are intelligent lighting solutions. And as for colour, settle for the drab cream or white theme found in so many homes if you want to be average, or come up with something creative you’ve seen implemented elsewhere if you want drastic change. This is an interior design course, so design this, too! Look at what your theme dictates and build accordingly and don’t be scared to experiment with colour.

Space is almost everything

One of the worst things you can do, especially if you have a small home, is purchase unnecessarily large furniture. Your home needs room to breathe. Some of the best looking homes are small homes that look spacious because of clever furnishing choices, and liberal sprinklings of sophisticated items. Dezeen is a fantastic source for all things design, and will undoubtedly inspire you as you improve your own home.

Just remember: theme is almost everything. If you have a consistent vision for how you want your home to look, you don’t even need to take an interior design course.
