If you’re redecorating your home, or paying someone else to do it for you, you’ll probably quickly become used to hearing a lot of home décor and furnishings terms you don’t understand. You hire the professionals because they have the knowledge needed to make your home a more beautiful place, but knowing a few simple interior design terms will help you to keep up with the process.
Colours
‘Advancing’ or ‘warm’ colours are colours like red and orange, which make objects seem closer and are affective in creating a romantic or cosy feel in a room. ‘Receding’ or ‘cool’ colours have the opposite effect – blues, greens and other colours in this group make objects appear further away, and are better used to create a relaxing, spacious effect.
Focal point
Every well-designed room has an object or area that the eye is immediately drawn to, and this is the focal point. Decorators will use the shapes and colours of home décor and furnishings to draw attention to this point, allowing the use of a dramatic item without making the room look cluttered.
Dado and chair rails

The chair rail is found mainly in older homes, and it’s there to prevent the wall from being damaged by furniture pushed against it. A chair rail can also be known as a dado rail. Many decorators like to paint different colours above and below the rail, and to leave the rail white, matching the skirting boards and curtain rails.
Don’t be afraid to ask
If there’s anything you’re confused about when it comes to home décor and furnishings, don’t be afraid to ask a professional or salesperson, or look it up. Knowing what you’re doing can save you plenty of trouble in the long run, and most people are only too happy to share to their expertise.
