When you’re renovating your kitchen, you’ll want to make good decisions about fixtures that will last you for years to come. One of these is the kitchen sink, which needs to be chosen based on practicality as well as how good it looks in the room. Material world

There are more choices available for a kitchen sink than you might imagine. Stainless steel is a great option when it comes to hygiene and a clean look, but be prepared to pay more for a heavier steel that won’t dent or scratch. Porcelain sinks have an attractively traditional look but can be stained, while granite sinks are luxurious and hard wearing, but cost more.

Size matters

A deeper sink is something you’ll be very grateful for when you’re washing larger pots and pans. A good average is about eight inches, but ten inches of depth is preferable.

Mounting pressure

An important factor in your choice of sink will be how the sink is mounted. Generally, most people go for an inset sink – the kind that is set into a kitchen countertop once a space has been created for it – but there are a few ways in which these sinks can be mounted. Under-mount sinks work well with stone and are fitted under the countertop with no visible rim, while an integral sink is simply a continuation of your countertop. Self-rimming sinks come with a lip that sits on the top of the counter.
