Your bedroom is the space where you spend a lot of your time – and the most relaxing, refreshing part of your day. It makes sense, then, that a bedroom should be well-designed and reflect your tastes. The good news is that an attractive bedroom doesn’t have to take too much effort to create, or cost too much, either. Follow some simple design rules and get some inexpensive ideas to put together the bedroom sanctuary that you’ve always wanted – all on a budget and with minimal effort.
Stay neutral
Decorating in a neutral colour is the easiest way to decorate your bedroom inexpensively. When it comes to fixtures like carpets and furnishings, plain and simple choices will mean that you won’t have to replace larger items for a good amount of time, while neutral bedding keeps your options open when it comes to choosing attractive, inexpensive accessories. A good rule of thumb is that the larger and the more expensive an item is, the more sensible it is to choose a neutral option. Since you’ll be keeping the item for a while, it’s an investment – while you shouldn’t be extravagant, you can consider spending a little more for good quality.

Look for second-hand items, and remember that you don’t have to use your vintage finds for the purposes for which they were designed: a bookcase can be used to store shoes, and a display cabinet is gorgeous for storing anything from jewellery to sweaters.
Get creative
Once you’ve got a neutral base to decorate your bedroom, you’re free to be creative with the way you accessorize the area. It’s easy to make items like cushion covers with a sewing machine and some pretty fabric, and you can look for more inexpensive ideas to make decorative touches for your bedrooms. You don’t have to try to save money by making absolutely everything yourself: a number of great accessories can be bought cheaply, too, but if making decorations for your bedroom makes you feel even more at home in your space, then it’s worth the effort.
Think long-term
Try to come up with inexpensive ideas that will save you money in the long-term. This means choosing fabrics that won’t stain or get damaged easily, and changing to more energy-efficient lightbulbs and appliances that are good for both the environment and your power bill.
Advice that’s priceless
One piece of advice that doesn’t depend on your budget is this: go for decoration that’s all about you. If you love the way your bedroom’s decorated, it won’t matter to you that it didn’t cost much, and you won’t need to replace anything in a hurry if you like it enough to keep it around for a while. Best of all is the fact that you’ll be amazed at how easily your decoration choices will co-ordinate if they’re all pieces that you love – trust your own instincts and inexpensive ideas and you’ll be surprised at the results you can achieve as you decorate your bedroom.
