‘Your environment – everything from seemingly inanimate objects, such as furniture, to the air you breathe and the colours that surround you –has a profound effect upon your energy levels. You need to learn to function efficiently in surroundings that enhance them,’ says Judith Wills in her book Four Weeks to Total Energy. Wills discusses how best to manage your surroundings to enhance your energy levels by incorporating Western and Eastern concepts like colour therapy and feng shui.

Energise your home

Your home is your place of rest, your sanctuary and is your personal space where you recharge your batteries so that you can go out into the world again ‑ full of energy and strength. The ambience of your home should balance your personality. You should be glad to come home and find the space pleasing. If this is not the case then you should look at redecorating or reorganising your home.

Work with colour

Wills advises that relaxing colours are good for bedrooms and warm colours are well suited to sitting areas. More stimulating colours can be introduced into the dining and kitchen areas. Dark and depressing colours like black and brown should be avoided.

Use natural light

Natural light at home is important for one’s energy levels. ‘If you tend to have trouble waking and feel slightly depressed in the morning, pick a home where the bedroom window faces east to catch the morning sun and enhance your mood,’ advises Wills. ‘If you get fatigued and depressed in the evening, pick a home where the sitting room/patio/conservancy faces west to catch the evening sun and improve your mood.’

Once you start re-decorating, you may naturally start to de-clutter your home and pay attention to the garden too. ‘Simple lines and architectural plants may bring you peace – and less back breaking work, incidentally!’ continues Wills.

She adds that once you feel liberated and vital, you can always apply the same principles to your car and your workspace.
