The writer’s vision

Writing
Photo: ustmakeit / Flickr

‘Since when did being a writer become a career choice,’ questions Tim Parks at NYR. He wonders if all the modern day degree courses and pecking orders make any difference to what gets written. It may seem that over time, society has held two visions of the writer. He is either a talented craftsman who is rewarded by his community for his services — or he is a self-determined individual who follows his own course, indifferent to the expectations of others. ‘Holy mackerel! We’re eating meat from cows that don’t eat grass.’ These are the words of chef Dan Barber, who has been listed as one of the most influential people on Time’s ‘Time 100′ list. She adds that she packs light so there are no extra airport fees to contend with. She also refrains from buying souvenirs. (more…)

Woodwork — veneers and inlays

Inlays
Photo: practicalowl / Flickr

Veneers are extremely thin sheets of wood that can be used to cover or decorate a wooden base. Just as wood is unique and not always uniform, so is veneer. These paper thin veneers are often described according to their source. They can be called crown, burr, burl, butt, ray, birds-eye, curly or striped, for instance. Inlays, on the other hand, serve to decorate table tops and wooden doors. Although they were historically created by highly-skilled carpenters, they can be bought ready made today. (more…)
